Events & Fundraising Meeting

The EFG held their first meeting of the new academic year on 3rd October to identify the fundraising target for the year ahead, and identify activities to help us achieve this.

You can read the full minutes from the meeting:

Events and Fundraising Meeting 3rd Oct

In brief, a target of £15,000 has been set for this academic year, and a number of fund raising initiatives have been identified to help us achieve this goal:

  • Winter Fair
  • P1/2/3 Friday afternoon Ceilidh
  • P4/5 Dance Party
  • P6/7 Disco
  • A comedy/music Night at Riddle’s Court. This would be a parents/carers ticketed event to raise funds. This would be after the family ceilidh.
  • A wine tasting in school.
  • Cinema events for children. We’re investigating an Into Films Membership to start a film club.
  • Our Summer Fair

For more information, or to offer help at any of these events, please email EFG Convenor, Fran

Playground Improvement Plan – Phase 3

Towards the end of last year we emailed the school community about our plans to expand the playground by closing Sciennes road to motorised traffic. Although closed to traffic, we would need to maintain a route through for pedestrians and cyclists.  We included plans showing how that could be achieved with two different configurations – one with the pedestrian / cycle route following the pavement on the northern side of Sciennes road (next to the existing playground railings), the other with the pedestrian / cycle route following the pavement on the south side of Sciennes road (along the edge of the nature strip).

Playground update Aug 2018

These plans are above.  Quite a few of you came to the workshop we held at the end of last year.

We also invited your views on the playground expansion a couple of times in the summer and it was great to hear feedback and comments. At all these feedback opportunities there has been support for our plans to expand the playground and a preference for the layout which brings the pedestrian / cycle access along the north side of Sciennes road.  During this time, we have also been liaising closely with the developers of the Sick Kids Hospital site and City of Edinburgh Council.

Last week we spoke to the teachers and other staff at the school again to gauge their opinions.  The staff were also in favour of this option.

We will now move ahead to get detailed plans drawn up to submit for planning permission.  If you have any feedback of comments at this stage, please contact Laura at  There will be an opportunity to view plans again and discuss any thoughts you might have before the Parent Council meeting on 13th Sept.

It is worth adding that we have taken advice from Ironside Farrar, transport consultants and landscape architects.

If any of you are interested in joining the group taking this project forward we would love to hear from you.  Again, please email Laura.

Swimathon 2018

swimathon- its back

Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th  April 2018

This yea, exclusively for P1, P2, P3 and P4 children we will be holding our annual swimathon event to help us achieve our target of raising  £8,500 to support school’s technology, Health and Wellbeing projects (which includes sports tuition e.g. swimming and cycling).  ALL children at Sciennes will benefit from the funds raised.

The Swimathon has been great fun in the past and we would like as many children as possible to take part again this year.  Children will have the opportunity to swim as many lengths/ breadths of the school pool as they can in a specified time.  Non-swimmers are encouraged to take part, using swimming aids in the shallow end of the pool, never going out of their depth.  The Swimathon is well staffed, with a qualified life guard on duty at all times.

When does my child swim?

The timetable is as follows:

Monday 23rd – P1 & P3

P1A (09:00-09:40),  P1B (09:40-10:20),  P1C (10:40-11:20),  P1D (11:20-12:00)

P3C (13:00-13:45),  P3B (13:45-14:30),  P3A (14:30-15:15)

Tuesday 24th – P2 & P4

P2A (09:00-09:45),  P2B (09:45-10:30),  P2C (10:50-11:35)

P4A (11:35-12:30),  P4B (13:30-14:20),  P4C (14:20-15:10)

Can I assist?

Yes please!  As with all Parent Council events we rely on volunteers.  You are welcome to come and count the pupils efforts as well as general support for your child’s class.  To signup, please use the following doodle poll link:

How to raise sponsorship money?

To make it easier for funds to raise money we have set up a BTmydonate page which in turn enables you to set up your own online sponsorship page.  You can access this by going to the following web address:

  • Raise sponsorship (If you have any trouble with the link just google ‘mydonate Sciennes’)
  • Click on ‘start fundraising’ to set up your child’s own online giving page. You can then send a link to relatives and friends who may want to sponsor your child.
  • If required, Click here to access a Swimathon Sponsorship Form for pupils wishing to use them

Mental Health Awareness Week: 14-18 May, 2018

Following the success of our Mental Health Awareness Week last year, the Health and Wellbeing group are planning another full programme of events for parents, teachers and pupils from 14th May – 18th May.

As a direct request from parents, the week will start of by looking at the importance of sleep. Sleep Scotland will deliver a presentation in the school hall on Monday 14th from 6.30 – 7.30pm followed by a Q and A session of twenty minutes. Sleep Scotland plan to pilot their new programme for primary schools in Sciennes in the forthcoming months and will be offering sessions for parents, pupils and will be providing training for school staff.

Alison Outred’s session last year was so popular that she has kindly agreed to run it again. On Tuesday she will give a talk in the school library on the introverted child, and on Thursday she will be analysing our personalities using the Myer Briggs test. Both sessions will be fairly limited in number, so book early to avoid disappointment.

Paula Gilhooly, Support for Learning teacher, will lead an introductory session on Non-Violent Resistance (NVR). NVR is a parenting framework which can help parents to create connected relationships with their children. NVR was the philosophy used by Ghandi, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King. Professor Haim Omer later developed NVR to be used in family settings. It focuses on changing the way the adult interacts with the child in order to achieve a more connected relationship.  This introductory session will take place in the Support for Learning base on Wednesday 16th May at 6.30pm when Paula will give an overview of the NVR framework. A more in depth 6 week course will be offered at a later date.
